Pre - Business Expo Walk in Southall on 25/6/22

Date: Sat 25 Jun 2022
Time: 1 pm - 3 pm
Description:
Join a free walk exploring the historical, multicultural and modern riches of Southall often referred to as Little India.

We are delighted to offer another free walk sponsored by Contactus Ealing, the Southall Business Expo organiser.

You will meet at Southall train station.

Opposite the train station is the new Green Quarter development, still in construction, though parts have been finished and people have moved in.

Other developments taking place nearby, all part of Southall regeneration, include The Margarine Works. This development is behind the railway station will replace the old Maypole Margarine factory that was opened in 1895.

Turning left from Southall train station, we head south towards what has been called Old Southall. We will walk along The Green and King Street stopping at a number of places on the way to talk about what is here now, what has been here and the changes to come.

We will look at the old Carnegie Library, and a music and banqueting venue called Tudor Rose which started in 1910 as Southall Electric Theatre; shops, businesses and churches. We will look at the Tudor Manor House and the Manor House Grounds dating from the sixteenth century.

On the way we see how much now has an Asian feel and colour to it three to four generations after the first people came from the sub-continent in the 1950s to live and work here.

We will visit a range of shops and businesses - Indian musical instruments, clothes, jewellery, groceries, bakers amongst them.

In the new library at The Dominion Centre, which was once a cinema, there is a Martinware pottery collection.

The new residents have prospered and built new places of worship or modified the old to celebrate their different faiths. Time permitting, we will enter a Hindu temple and/or a Sikh Gurdwara.

Please wear suitable clothing and footwear and be aware that if we enter a temple, you will need to take off your shoes and may need to wear a head covering like a scarf for women or bandana for men. They are provided but some people prefer to bring their own.

It's always advisable to carry some water and a snack with you but after the walk you may want to stay on with us for a usual chill at a convenient eating place.

Please contact us if you have any questions regarding the walk or if you would like to book a tour with us for your party.

If you would like to participate in the walk, register on Eventbrite.
