Man convicted of sex attack in Greenford park

Wed 07 Sep 2016
A Greenford man has been found guilty of multiple sexual offences after subjecting a woman to a two hour sex attack in a park during broad daylight.

Aqil Ali, 31 (27.05.85) of Mornington Road, Greenford, was found guilty on Wednesday 7 September 2016 following a six-day-trial at Isleworth Crown Court.

He was convicted of ten offences namely; kidnapping, two counts of rape , two counts of assault by penetration, attempted rape, actual bodily harm, theft and two offences of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent.

His victim was a woman, aged in her late 40s, on her way to work on the morning of Saturday, 5 March 2016.

He approached her and asked for a cigarette. When the victim said she did not smoke he launched the assault, dragged her into a secluded spot and brutally attacked her.

He then stole money from his victim and fled the scene.

The victim raised the alarm at a nearby shop, despite being injured and very distressed.

Detectives from the Sexual Offences Exploitation and Child Abuse Command began an immediate investigation, conducting extensive enquiries and studying CCTV footage from the park.

The CCTV captured Ali entering and leaving the park, but his face was obscured with clothing.

He was later identified by a DNA match. He was arrested at his home address on 7 March 2016 and charged the following day.

Detective Inspector Neil John of Sexual Offences Exploitation and Child Abuse Command, said:
"I must firstly express my thanks and admiration for the victim. Despite all that she has endured she has had the courage to give evidence that has seen her attacker brought to justice."

"Be in no doubt, this was a truly horrific crime. Ali was brutal and vicious, and carried out a sustained attack on a woman who was innocently making her way to work. I am both pleased and relieved that he has been convicted and that he will now be made to face the consequences of his own cruelty and depravity."

Sentencing will take place on Wednesday, 12 October 2016 at Isleworth Crown Court.
