Remembrance Sunday in Southall

Lots of people gathered at the Southall War Memorial on The Green, Southall to pay their respects to the fallen men and women during conflicts old and new.

Remembrance Sunday events also take place across the borough on Sunday, 13 November 2016.

Those present were the local MP Virendra Sharma, local councillors, business leaders, the police, fire and ambulance services, schools and the young and the old.

The service was led Revd Mark Poulson, associate vicar of St John’s Church, Southall.

A 2 minute silence was observed on Sunday at 11am to remember those who died.

Jags Sangehera summed up the services as “A respectful service in Southall involving all faiths, cultures and backgrounds. We will remember them”. we come together to pay our respects".

"Makes you appreciate what a beautiful and diverse community our Borough is when we come together to pay our respects".

After the silence, there was opportunity for everyone present to lay their wreath to mark Remembrance Sunday.

Councillor Ranjit Dheer laid the first wreath, on behalf of his wife the outgoing Mayor of Ealing Councillor Harbhajan Kaur Dheer.

The other wreaths laid were:

  • Virendra Sharma MP for Ealing Southall
  • representatives of the Royal British Legion
  • representatives of the Metropolitan Police force
  • The local Fire Service
  • St John Ambulancev
  • Mr Harbajan Sanji on behalf of Southall Chamber of Commerce
  • representives of the Norwood Green Residents Association
  • local Conservative Party
  • representatives of St John’s Church
  • Mr Fazal Mahmood from the Central Jamia Masjid and Chairman of the Southall Faith Forum
  • Father Gerard from St Anselm’s Church
  • Mr Umesh Chandrasharma from Ram Mandir
  • Mr Navraj Singh from the Singh Sabha Gurdwara
  • representatives from the Sikh Scouts
  • representaives from The Indian Workers Association
  • Hambrough Primary School
  • St Anselm's Catholic Primary School
  • Clifton Primary School
  • Featherstone High School
  • local members of the public

Afterwards everyone was invited back to the nearby St John’s Church on Church Avenue for a short civic service followed by refreshments for everyone.
