Fake and offensive DVDs seized Southall

Mon 13 Sep 2010
More than 10,000 counterfeit DVDs have been seized in a joint operation by Ealing Council’s trading standards officers and the police.

A raid on a music and DVD shop in Southall Broadway uncovered unclassified pornographic titles including "Doghouse" and "A Naughty Doll".

Apart from the pornographic titles thousands of counterfeit Bollywood and Hollywood DVDs, thought to have a street value of more than £50,000, were recovered.

The hoard included illegal copies of box office films like "The Infidel", "It’s A Wonderful Afterlife" and "Aisha".

Councillor Ranjit Dheer, cabinet member for Safer Communities, said: " The pornography is very concerning because it contains offensive images."

"We will not tolerate anyone selling counterfeit products and will continue to take enforcement action against people caught breaking the law."

"The sale of counterfeit DVDs affects the livelihoods of legitimate businesses and these profiteering traders are ruining the wonderful shopping experience Southall has to offer."

"Piracy has a negative impact on the creative industry and the money being made from selling these DVDs goes on to fund other criminal activities."

"Our Regulatory Services department works closely with the police to keep local businesses and residents safe. This is another great example of what can be achieved by residents sharing important information with us, enabling us to take enforcement action"

Trading standards officers are continuing their investigation. All the DVDs confiscated will be destroyed.
