Save Southall Green & Retain Dominion Car Park

Time: 18:30 am – 20:00 pm
Public meeting to Save Southall Green & Retain the Dominion Car Park, at the Monsoon Banqueting Hall, with local and national speakers.
The current plans for Southall Green involve the demolition of the Dominion Car Park and surrounding area to build over 600 new homes in two 19-storey blocks but WITHOUT any improvements in the surrounding infrastructure.
There are no plans to either create additional medical surgeries or school places.
Car parking spaces will be drastically reduced at the Dominion car park. The area already suffers from a chronic traffic congestion, and the car park is the only public space left for residents, visitors and shoppers to park in Old Southall.
Lack of car parking will impact on all of Southall, their businessses, trade and places of worship reducing social economic well-being of communities of Southall.
Many businesses of The Green have been served with compulsory purchase orders, leading to the loss of their only livelihood and the businesses who are spared will be without any proper car park potentially forcing them to close and leave later.
Many of us – residents and businesses – have objected to these plans and the Government has now agreed to hold a Public Inquiry to hear our concerns on 11 October 2022.
The future for Southall
We all agree that Southall needs positive improvements, but that vision must be people-led and not by set building developers whose main interest is in making profit.
In 2014, Ealing Council and the Mayor of London agreed a Southall Opportunity Area Planning Framework to proceed with its development plan in Southall.
Here a few important examples of how some of their original promises have been abandoned without any explanation.
1: The plan stated that potentionally 6, 000 new homes could be built in Southall.
What is the reality? It is now building 11, 537 new homes, nearly double the number of new homes without the necessary infrastructure to support newcomers, Only last month, for instance, the National Grid warned the Greater London Authority that the electricity capacity on the national grid cannot meet increased requirements of so many new developments in the borough & West London.
2: The plan promised to retain the current traditional Victorian low build character of the town with most new builds height around The Green area to be only 3 or 4 storeys.
What is reality? Southall will witness a staggering 48 new buildings erected and these will be 10-19 storey high; ana 19 gigantic towers will be built and these will be between 20 – 2 storey high. The new plan will alter Southall’s entire land and air space taking away its skies and air quality turning it into a corncrete tower city.
3. The plan promised fusing homes and with existent community ensuring improvements in the housing stock with more affordable units and large family homes to ease overcrowding.
What is the reality? Only 30% of the properties will be “affordable rent” which in reality are actually unaffordable for most people; less than 20% units will house families; and very little social housing. Worst still, some areas will be economically segregated from local communities by creation of new affluent quarters – developers are already marketing these properties GLOBALLY.
We have the power to make the difference and shape our future.
