Celebrate the completion of works to transform 36 disused garages into a community hub on the Havelock estate in Southall.
Open Havelock is a meanwhile spaces project delivered by Catalyst in partnership with Ealing Council with funding from the Mayor of London, Sport England, A2 Dominion and Catalyst.
36 abandoned garages and 2,000sqm of associated under crofts and green space on the Havelock estate have been transformed into social and delightful ‘meanwhile’ spaces that deliver tangible community benefits whilst the area is regenerated.
In addition to providing opportunities for play, sports and recreation, the project will provide workshops, studios and storage space to empower local businesses and community groups.
The project aims to build and sustain partnerships and programs that will be incorporated into the region's long-term strategy and design.
Open Havelock has been developed through extensive community engagement and is based on a good understanding of local needs, problems and ambitions.
It adopts an asset-based approach that maps and builds on community assets such as networks, skills, volunteering, entrepreneurship and facilities.
The project is supported by feasibility study and is shaped by live testing through which the planned elements have already begun to appear on site.
