Shoba Yatra (Hindu Procession)

The Hindu Festival of Ganesh Chaturthi (birthday of Lord Ganesh, the Hindu elephant -headed God) will be celebrated on the streets of Southall.
The Procession will start at 12 noon from the passage way between Vishwa Hindu Mandir and number 4 Lady Margaret Road (Southall). It will proceed down South Road up to the Ram Mandir in King Street. It will then return back and terminate opposite Southall Park on Uxbridge Road, where prasadum (food) will be served.
Followers will then make their own way to Putney Pier, London, where an idol of Lord Ganesh will be immersed in the River Thames.
The elephant headed Ganesh is the son of Shiva and he is one of the most important Hindu Gods
The birthday of Lord Ganesh, this year falls on Saturday 15th September 2007. Every Hindu family worships the specially made Ganesh idols in their homes for ten days, before they are immersed either in sea or rivers.
This very auspicious festival of great importance is celebrated every year, especially in Maharashtra (the third largest state of India situated in the western part of India).
The event is not organized by the 2 Mandirs in Southall. It has been organized by the Hindu Culture & Heritage Society (UK) and will be celebrated for the third successive year outside of India.
