Ealing Council has passed a motion to show that it is against any form of racism and discrimination in the borough – and is determined to show that everyone is welcome here.

At the full council meeting on Tuesday (11 June 2019) at Ealing Town Hall, Councillor Peter Mason put forward the following motion condemning prejudice and discrimination against sections of society.

The motion reads: "This council adopts the definition of anti-Semitism, including its examples, as set out by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, and adopts the definition of Islamophobia, including its examples, as set out by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims. This council condemns all forms of racism, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, homophobia, transphobia, ageism, pregnancy and maternity discrimination, ableism and sexism and reaffirms our commitment to fighting against them."

The motion was passed unanimously.

Council leader Julian Bell said: "Our borough consists of people from all kinds of backgrounds, all of whom have contributed beyond measure to our economic, social, cultural and civic life."

"In an independent survey of residents carried out on behalf of the council in 2018, 86% of respondents said they believed people from different ethnic backgrounds got on well in our borough."

"I know many visitors are, rightly, impressed by the way in which our communities live and work together. Everyone in Ealing should be proud of its diversity; of its long history of providing a home to people from across the globe."

"Ealing is a better, and also more prosperous, place as a result of this rich diversity."

"The council has strong values of respect, tolerance and understanding, values that are also strong in our residents and wider communities. We will not tolerate intolerance."
