Reporting concerns over foul odours in Southall

Sun 08 Aug 2021
Following ongoing concerns about foul odours in Southall, the council has finally appointed an environmental protection officer who can respond when complaints are reported.

This is to show that the council is taking the concerns of local residents seriously after many years of doing nothing. Whether any actions will be taken is another matter.

The officer will be based in Southall and will respond to odour complaints during core hours (8am-4pm, Monday-Friday). Further recruitment is ongoing to allow for operational hours to be extended.

To allow the officer to respond to reports of odour, residents are asked to report it at the time of smelling it using either the Odour Collect App or by emailing southallodours@ealing.gov.uk, both of which notify when an odour is reported so action can be taken promptly.

Residents can also call 07375 484782 and leave a message between 8am-4pm, but for prompt action it is best to report via the app or email.

Outside of the core hours of 8am-4pm, residents can also report through the out of hours reporting line on 020 8825 8111.

Councillor Peter Mason, leader of Ealing Council said: "Local residents have genuine concerns about their health and that of their families from the impacts of unpleasant odours, dust, noise and traffic."

Building on contaminated land poses a threat to people’s health.

This nuisance been going for many years without any action being taken by the council and residents being told that there are no KNOWN long-term health effects.

Surely suffering for many years has a serious effect on a person’s mental and physical health. The other yet UNKNOWN long terms effects only add to the suffering.

If the council believes that the “Local residents have genuine concerns about their health and that of their families from the impacts of unpleasant odours, dust, noise and traffic” for many years why has nothing been done about it?

Council Officers have witnessed the odour for themselves on numerous occasions for years. Telling residents to shut their windows because of the stench is not helpful. How many more 'inspections' does the council need to trigger an abatement notice?

Imagine how they would react, if they and their loved ones were suffering. "Keep on reporting" is simply not good enough.

#EnoughIsEnough

"One day they might actually believe us."
"One day they might actually take some action."

Is Ealing Council taking residents "genuine concerns" seriously?

A council prosecuted a woman for repeated cannabis smells from her home annoying her neighbours. The council's anti-social behaviour officer said "Residents should be able to live in clean communities, free from nuisances caused by others, in whatever form they may take."

That is taking the residents "genuine concerns" seriously.
