Ealing Council begins work on 125 new homes in Southall
Wed 30 Mar 2022Work began in November 2021 and is expected to be finished by summer 2024. The project is being partly funded by a £10.77 million grant from the Greater London Authority (GLA), which will ensure that Ealing Council and Broadway Living RP can continue to build affordable homes in the next five years.
The homes are being delivered by Ealing Council and Broadway Living (the council’s housing company), in partnership with the developer Mackenzie Homes.
There will be a mixture of one, two and three bedroom apartments available, each with its own inset balcony, pedestrianised sidewalks, and planted areas.
101 of the 125 new homes will be rented out at London Affordable Rent to low-income residents in the area. The remaining 24 homes will be offered on shared ownership.
The development will consist of just two residential buildings ranging in height from four to twelve storeys.
The site for the new Southall homes consists of two plots of land. One plot was the Southall market car park owned by Ealing Council and the other plot being the former cattle market site which was privately owned.
76 public car park spaces will be provided underneath the development to replace the loss of the Southall market car park.
Francis Merrick of Southall was granted permission by William III to hold a cattle market in the village of Southall in 1698. The last small animal and horse market was held in 2007.
Councillor Lauren Wall, cabinet member for genuinely affordable homes said: "These beautiful apartments will provide a safe and comfortable environment for families on low incomes, with great links to amenities and shopping areas in Southall."
"Our homebuilding programme is one of the biggest in London and by April this year, we will have smashed our ambitious target to deliver 2,500 genuinely affordable homes for the borough by May 2022."
