Soon after the incident social media posts said "An unconfirmed fatality from met police officer on police cordon point."

"The vehicle involved has reportedly been recovered."

"The police are searching for a BMW X5 with a 2005 registration plate that was driving recklessly in the area at the time of the incident."

"That crossing is treacherous during busy periods. Proper lights and crossings needed rather than an ineffectual roundabout, especially given the number of people crossing after coming off the bus and to and from the shops. Cars often speeding down from the bridge."
