Consultation on new electric vehicle charging points

Mon 20 Feb 2023
Ealing Council is installing new electric vehicle charging points across the borough to improve local air quality, encourage active travel, and help people make the switch to more environmentally-friendly cars.

At the end of 2022, there were over 5,900 electric vehicles in the borough, and this number is increasing. The inability to easily charge an electric vehicle remains a major concern for many people.

The council is seeking the views of residents in the proposed roads where it plans to install fast, new electric vehicle charging points with dedicated parking spaces.

These are the roads being consulted on:

  • Park View Road – UB1
  • Thurston Road – UB1
  • Cavendish Avenue – W13
  • Clitherow Avenue – W7
  • Park Road – W7
  • Rossall Crescent – NW10
  • Saxon Drive – W3
  • Selbourne Gardens – UB6

Reducing the number of journeys made by high polluting vehicles is central to the council's climate strategy, which aims to achieve 'net zero' by 2030.

The council is committed to ensuring every resident in the borough is within a 5-minute walk of an electric vehicle charging point and to distribute the charge points evenly throughout the borough.

Ealing Council has almost doubled the number of EVCPs from 230 to 450 and is on track to deliver 2,500 by 2026.

Councillor Deirdre Costigan, the council's deputy leader and Cabinet member for climate action, said that the council is committed to rapidly expanding the number of accessible EVCPs and wants to consider the views of local people through the consultation process.

She added that switching to an electric vehicle could have financial benefits as running costs are much lower than traditional cars, and electric vehicles are exempt from the congestion charge and ultra-low emission zone schemes.

Councillor Deirdre Costigan, said "To support these aims, we are also rolling out a huge, £10million programme to support local people to choose active travel such as walking, cycling and scooting over shorter journeys by car."

"This includes everything from new cycle routes and bike storage, to improved surfaces for roads and paths, to our School Streets programme, which is making it easier for children to walk, scoot and cycle to and from the school gates."

Residents can read the consultation documentation and give their views through a short online questionnaire, which will run from February 13th to March 13th, 2023.
