Being a school governor - what are the responsibilities?
Sat 15 Apr 2023Ealing Council and Governors for Schools are collaborating to host an online recruitment event on Thursday, April 20, from 6-7.30 pm, where individuals interested in becoming school governors can meet with representatives from local schools who are seeking new members for their governing boards.
The event provides an excellent opportunity to inquire about the duties of a school governor and gain insights from existing governors, facilitating the identification of the ideal governor-school match. Additionally, council officers will be present to discuss the available training and address any queries.
To register for the event, you book a ticket on eventbrite.
Not just for parents
Unless they intend to serve as a parent governor, school governors are not required to possess any relevant expertise or connection with a school. However, parent governors must have a child attending the school. However, a dedication to guaranteeing exceptional results for local children, as well as a desire to learn and contribute, is necessary.
Governorship involves guaranteeing a clear vision, values, and strategic course for the school. The board of governors provides support to the headteacher and senior management team while also holding them accountable and making decisions about budgets and resources.
Typically, the average time commitment for a school governor is six to ten days per year. As per Section 50 of the Employment Rights Act 1996, employers are required to provide employees who serve as school governors with appropriate time off to fulfil their responsibilities.
Governors play a crucial role in supporting the schools of the borough. They reflect the local community and bring along a diverse set of valuable skills and experiences. During times of national crisis, providing support and guidance to headteachers becomes particularly significant.
If you've considered becoming a school governor and are curious about the role's nature, attend the information event on Thursday 20 April, starting at 6 pm.
