Get Southall Moving consultation

Wed 17 May 2023
Ealing Council is asking for residents help to Get Southall Moving. They are working with Let's Go Southall to engage with the community to make the streets less crowded, safer, greener, and more enjoyable for all road users.

In an effort to minimize traffic, alleviate congestion, and improve air quality in Southall, the council is eager to gather your input on ways how to make it easier for everyone to get moving. This includes activities such as walking, cycling, jogging, scooting, and even playful modes like hopping, skipping, and jumping.

Your feedback is crucial to the council's decision-making process regarding a range of ideas aimed at improving Southall. These ideas encompass traffic calming measures, enhanced bus routes for faster commuting, improved pavements for pedestrians, and the introduction of new cycle lanes. The goal is to alleviate traffic congestion by encouraging residents to opt for walking or cycling instead of short car trips.

Residents can read more about the plan and share their ideas with the council to help create a more accessible and active environment for all.

On Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th, Ealing Council and Lets Go Southall will be visiting businesses across Southall to discuss these changes suggested for Southall roads and footpaths. They will be asking for residents feedback.

Ensure that you take part as your input is vital to create less congested and more safe and greener areas.

Councillor Deirdre Costigan, the council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for climate change, said: "We know that traffic congestion, air pollution and road safety are major concerns for Southall residents."

"That’s why we are doing this consultation, to find out what local people think about how we can make our streets safer, cleaner and more pleasant for everyone. We want to hear from residents about what they think will work best."

The main roads are blocked with traffic at certain times of the day. You can walk faster than travelling by bus or car. You don’t need a consultation exercise to realise that. You just need to look where the blockage is and remove/reduce it.

The pavements in Southall, such as Southall Broadway, often face obstructions caused by parked cars, businesses encroaching onto the pavements, and advertising boards, among other things. Addressing these issues doesn't require a consultation process. Rather, it calls for enforcement by someone in authority who can take the initiative to communicate and enforce regulations, ensuring that these obstructions are promptly addressed. By actively monitoring and addressing such violations, we can maintain clear and accessible pavements for the benefit of pedestrians.

Do we need a consultation, to ask, if enforcement action should be taken more often?
