Ealing Council installs 25 new bike hangars

Tue 30 May 2023
Ealing Council made a commitment to enhance active travel by installing 25 bike hangars throughout the borough during the spring season.

This initiative was part of their £10 million investment aimed at supporting activities such as cycling, walking, scooting, and utilizing public transportation. Residents now have access to 25 newly installed hangars, in locations suggested by the community, where they can safely and securely store their bicycles.

Bike hangars are now available at an incredibly low price of only 70p per month, providing a cost-effective and secure solution for keeping your bike safe. They are the most affordable option among bike storage facilities in London.

Residents feedback

The bike hangar consultation in December 2022 received 349 responses, providing local residents with an opportunity to express their preferences regarding the placement of bike hangars. In addition to gathering feedback on desired locations, the consultation also sought opinions on the council's criteria for determining suitable sites for these facilities.

The residents have endorsed the prioritization of the following criteria for selecting bike hangar locations by the council:

  • Volume of requests from residents
  • Accessibility for residents with limited access to garages or sheds, enabling them to park their bikes near their homes
  • Incidence of bike thefts in the area
  • Strong community support for bike hangars
  • Equitable distribution of bike hangars throughout the borough

Feedback for next installations

Residents can still specify their preferred locations for new bike hangar locations. Their input remains valuable in shaping the future placement of these facilities.

The council has plans to install an additional 25 bike hangars across the borough by the end of this summer. The aim is to have at least 150 hangars in place by 2026, further enhancing active travel options for residents in the coming years.
