Basketball Nets in Spikesbridge Park: A Personal Journey
Tue 20 Jun 2023During my time living in Southall, I've had a personal experience that has left a lasting impression on me. Over the course of seven years, I've observed that many of the hoops in the local parks lack basketball nets.
Fortunately, my search for a solution led me to discover a charitable organization called Project Swish, which is operated by Basketball England. This incredible initiative offers free nets to parks that are in need. Not only that, but they are able to redesign and repaint the entire court, provided they receive permission from the court's owner, typically the local council.
Excited about the prospect of enhancing my local park, where I often enjoy playing basketball, known as Spikes Bridge Park in Southall, I reached out to Project Swish. They kindly sent me a couple of nets, which I plan to install myself.
Reflecting on my basketball journey, I recall a time when there was considerable discussion about funding cuts for GB Basketball, particularly during my involvement in the National league.
However, witnessing the commitment of Basketball England to invest in initiatives like Project Swish fills me with optimism. It demonstrates their dedication to providing nets and potentially even new courts for future generations to enjoy the sport that we all love.
Basketball England’s vision is to create a sport that’s valued in every community and accessible in every school, college and university, and inspires the wider population to be engaged in the game.
#ProjectSwish is Basketball England’s mission to improve outdoor basketball courts across England.
In 2021, they provided more than 3000 free nets. They are determined to surpass their previous accomplishments and set new records.
