Two Southall Businesses Display False Hygiene Ratings

Wed 08 Nov 2023
Two Southall businesses, the Wild West Grill and Bulsho Friends Cuisine, have been displaying false hygiene rating stickers in their front windows.

Both businesses were zero-rated, indicating an "urgent improvement is necessary," but they were displaying 3 rating stickers in their windows.

The Wild West Grill on King Street was awarded a Food Hygiene Rating of 0 (Urgent Improvement Necessary) by London Borough of Ealing on 27th July 2023. The previous rating of 3 was on 23rd February 2022.

The Bulsho Friends Cuisine on The Green was awarded a Food Hygiene Rating of 0 (Urgent Improvement Necessary) by London Borough of Ealing on Friday 4 August 2023. The previous rating of 3 was on Monday 14 Feb 2022.

The two businesses are only 300 metres apart and were still using their old stickers. Ealing Council enforcement officers are expected to be sent to have the old stickers removed.

The businesses, although legally required to display their hygiene ratings in some parts of the UK, have the option to do so in England, where they are treated as guidelines for consumers.

Ealing Council lacks the authority to issue fines to restaurants providing false information, making it difficult to penalize misleading establishments.

Ealing Council has one of the highest numbers of food establishments in London and the zero-rated places constitute less than 1% of food businesses.

The council issued the second-highest number of enforcement notices related to food standards last year.
