"Defiance: Fighting the Far Right" airs on Channel 4
Mon 01 Apr 2024Over the course of three hours, 'Defiance: Fighting the Far Right' examines events from the Southall protests, the tragic death of Blair Peach, the Battle for Brick Lane, and the remarkable story of the Bradford 12.
These events were usually ignored by the press, the Police, and the government.
Suresh Grover of the Monitoring Group said "This is our history. We want everyone who needs to see it to see it, and to be part of the conversation. We hope it sparks. Please put a reminder in your diaries. And please share this."
Episode 1: Monday 8 April 2024 from 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm
In 1976, the brutal murder of Gurdip Singh Chaggar took place in Southall. The National Front was rising. In response, a coalition of young British Asians united to defend themselves.
Episode 2: Tuesday 9 April 2024 from 10:00 pm to 11:05 pm
In 1979, the National Front rally in Southall erupts into violence. Questions about police brutality arise and anti-racist teacher Blair Peach is killed by the Police
Episode 3: Wednesday 10 April 2024 from 10:00 pm to 11:05 pm
In 1981, the Southall Youth Movement clashes with skinheads, while in Bradford, young individuals face the challenge of convincing a jury of their right to self-defense in a landmark case.
Invitation only event
Channel 4 is organising a screening of new documentary 'Defiance: Fighting the Far Right,' featuring insights into Southall and the Southall Youth Movement at the Dominion Centre, Southall on Friday 5th April 2024.
Following the screening, there will be a brief panel discussion and refreshments served. The esteemed panel will include Suresh Grover, Balraj Purewal, and two other individuals intimately involved in the creation of this documentary. The discussion will be chaired by a prominent national figure.
