West London Stand Up To Racism to Mobilize Against Far Right in Brentford
Wed 07 Aug 2024The far right plans to gather tonight, Wednesday, 7 August 2024, at 7:00 PM, targeting a hotel they claim is housing asylum seekers.
With limited notice, West London Stand Up To Racism convened a Zoom meeting last night, Tuesday, 6 August, to strategize their response. The meeting, publicized on social media, drew significant local participation, including members from various organizations and trade unions.
The collective decision was to stage a peaceful counter-protest at the same time and location. To ensure safety and order, stewards from multiple organizations and individual volunteers have been appointed.
The organizers emphasize the importance of vigilance and peaceful conduct among participants, urging them to exercise their right to protest against the rising tide of racism and fascism. They are encouraged to cooperate with the police, remain in groups, and follow the stewards' instructions.
Balwinder Rana, co-convenor of West London Stand Up To Racism and a veteran activist, stated, "We will not allow racists and fascists to intimidate our asylum seeker and Muslim brothers and sisters or any other community members. We will peacefully protest to show our solidarity with refugees and support for Muslim communities."
Rana, now 77, has a long history of anti-racism activism. He served as the chief steward during the National Front rally in Southall in 1979 and was the founding president of the UK's first Asian youth movement in Gravesend, Kent, in 1969. In 2010, he founded Sikhs Against the EDL, which was relaunched three weeks ago at the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara in Southall.
Reflecting on his lifelong commitment, Rana said, "For the past 55 years, I've fought against racism and fascism. Although these threats re-emerge periodically, we have consistently overcome them. Despite my age, I will continue this fight, and I'm confident we will prevail once again."
MPs have warned of potential far-right riots in Harrow, Hounslow, Finchley, and Walthamstow, with the Met Police investigating the legitimacy of the protest location list circulating online.
