New look for Southall library
Mon 28 Oct 2024
While they will continue to offer traditional library services—like access to books, study areas, online resources, and activities such as children’s story time—the new layouts will focus on flexibility. Each library will feature adaptable spaces that can be hired by the local community for various purposes.
The redesign will focus on creating a modern and open feel, with an emphasis on natural light. One key change is the introduction of mobile bookshelves, replacing fixed shelves, allowing for easy reconfiguration of the space. This will enable the libraries to host cultural events, performances, meetings, and community group activities more effectively
Upgraded Technology
Technology upgrades are also a part of the refurbishment. Visitors will continue to have access to library computers and tablets, with additional digital plug-in points being installed to support those who bring their own devices.
Improvements at the Dominion Centre
The underused foyer in the Dominion Centre in Southall is set to be revamped as well. In addition to more flexible space for hire, a new meeting room and kitchenette will be added, enhancing the library’s ability to host community events.
Investment for Vibrant Communities
The refurbishment is funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which has been allocated to Ealing Council by the government.
Blerina Hashani, the council’s cabinet member for thriving communities, emphasized the importance of libraries as community hubs: "Books will always be at the heart of our libraries but by making the spaces more flexible they can provide so much more, from entertainment, drama performances on a stage in the library to community meetings or celebrations."
The investment aims to ensure libraries remain vibrant and welcoming spaces for everyone in the community
