Massive increase in parking fines since 2022
Thu 31 Oct 2024During 2022, Ealing Council issued 34,661 penalty charge notices (PCNs) generating £1.75 million in revenue.
In 2023, the number of fines surged by 149%, with 89,618 PCNs issued bringing in £4.38 million – an increase of £2.6 million. That is 245 PCNs per day, compared to just 95 daily in 2022.
So far in 2024, the council has issued 79,216 notices, bringing in £3.3 million in revenue. The projected PCNs for 2024 is 105K with a potential income of £4.5 million.
Since 2022, Ealing council has issued a total of 203,495 tickets, raising approximately £9.5 million in fines.
Ealing Council attributed the increase in penalty charge notices (PCNs) to a combination of increased enforcement due to low compliance, more CPZs being introduced, and better technology like Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems.
Key hotspots for fines include The Broadway in Southall, which saw 3,249 fines in 2023 and 4,661 fines so far in 2024. This location has consistently been one of the most problematic for parking violations, likely due to its heavy traffic and busy commercial activity.
Although enforcement only began in recent years, proper enforcement now takes place just once a month as part of the council's ongoing efforts to improve compliance in high-congestion zones. Despite the limited frequency, this focused approach reflects the council’s intention to address parking challenges in these busy areas effectively.
Southall accounts for three of the top problematic parking locations in the London borough Ealing, with Bridge Road and King Street being the other two areas.
