Southall Remembrance Sunday 2024
Thu 07 Nov 2024Remembrance Sunday ceremonies will take place across the borough on Sunday, 10 November 2024.
Residents will assemble at 10:45 a.m., including local councillors, business leaders, representatives from the police, fire, and ambulance services, as well as schools, young people, and older residents alike.
The service is typically led by Reverend Canon Mark Poulson, Interim Minister of St John’s Church in Southall.
At 11 a.m., a two-minute silence will be observed in remembrance of those who lost their lives.
The first wreath will probably be laid by former Mayor of Ealing, Councillor Hitesh Tailor, followed by an opportunity for others to lay their own wreaths in tribute. Also attending will be Councillor Kamaljit Nagpal, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for decent living incomes.
After the ceremony, everyone is invited to St John’s Church on Church Avenue for a brief civic service and refreshments.
An estimated 1.5 million Muslim soldiers lost their lives during World Wars I and II.
More than 161,000 Indian soldiers died in combat during World Wars I and II.
Over 83,000 Sikh soldiers sacrificed their lives in the First and Second World Wars.
Khudadad Khan was the first Muslim to win the Victoria Cross in 1914.
The initial awards to Indian troops were presented to Darwan Singh Negi and Khudadad Khan.
