Student Spreads Christmas Cheer with Pop-Up Food Bank

Sat 28 Dec 2024
A Year 10 student from Featherstone High School in Southall, Mohammed Asraf, brought festive joy to families in need by organizing a pop-up food and toy bank just in time for Christmas.

The event took place on Monday 23 December 2024, at the Featherstone Sports Centre, adjacent to the school.

Mohammed, alongside his family, fellow students, and staff members, worked tirelessly to gather a wide range of donations, including food, household essentials, and toys, to support struggling families during the holiday season.

A Team Effort

Mohammed collaborated with his year group, Head of Year Ms. Nixon, and Sports Centre Manager Juma Abdullahi to make the idea a reality. The initiative received enthusiastic support from the school community, with Year 7 community ambassadors stepping in to collect toy donations, and staff members, including the library team, helping to organize and sort the goods.

The event itself was led by Mohammed and his sister Kathija, with additional support from Ms. Nixon, Ms. Thompson, and volunteer Dee Bharj.

Gratitude and Recognition

Reflecting on the overwhelming response, Mohammed said: "To all the teachers at Featherstone High School and the students who have supported me and contributed towards my food bank collection, I would like to say a huge ‘thank you.’ I was overwhelmed by all the support and guidance I have had from you all, and I could not have done this without you."

This isn’t the first time Mohammed has shown his commitment to helping the community—his efforts have previously earned him recognition at the Southall Community Alliance Awards.

A Heartwarming Example

Featherstone High School Headteacher Nathan Walters praised Mohammed’s kindness and initiative, saying: "To be so kind and thoughtful at this young age, Mohammed is a credit to his family and his school. He is hoping to plan more events in the new year to help those in need. He really is proof that Christmas can still be a time for giving."

The event, made possible through the collective efforts of students, staff, and the wider community, exemplifies how acts of generosity can make a big difference during challenging times.
