Southall-linked conservationist awarded British Empire Medal for services to nature

Sat 13 Jun 2026
A conservationist closely associated with environmental work in Southall and across West London has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the King's Birthday Honours for services to nature and urban wildlife.

Kabir Kaul has been recognised for his environmental advocacy since 2018, supporting a range of projects aimed at protecting and restoring green spaces across London.

His work includes major involvement with the Brent River Park area and the successful campaign to secure protection for Warren Farm Nature Reserve, a valuable green space on the edge of Southall.

The award is a significant honour for a campaigner who has become one of the most recognisable voices for urban nature in West London.

For many local residents, Warren Farm has become a symbol of what community action can achieve. Once under threat, the site is now protected and recognised for its ecological importance.

Supporters say Kabir played an important role in raising awareness of the reserve's rich wildlife and helping local people understand the value of preserving natural habitats in urban areas.

His campaigning has highlighted the importance of meadows, wetlands, rivers and other green spaces that provide a home for birds, insects and other wildlife.

Speaking after receiving the honour, Kabir said the award underlines the importance of nature in cities. He described access to green and blue spaces as essential for health, wellbeing and climate resilience.

He also paid tribute to the volunteers, campaigners and local residents whose dedication helped secure long-term protection for Warren Farm.

The Brent River Park Charity praised his contribution, describing him as a passionate advocate whose vision and enthusiasm helped turn the dream of a protected nature reserve into reality.

The charity said his work has inspired many people to take a greater interest in wildlife and the environment on their own doorstep.

The recognition comes at a time when access to nature is becoming increasingly important across Southall, Ealing and neighbouring parts of West London.

Local campaigners hope the award will draw further attention to the need to protect urban green spaces for future generations.

The British Empire Medal will be formally presented later this year by the Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London.

For supporters across Southall and West London, the honour is recognition not only of one individual's achievements, but also of the growing movement to protect and celebrate nature in the heart of the city.
