Southall Police arrest nine wanted suspects during Facial Recognition operation

Mon 22 Jun 2026
A targeted policing operation using Live Facial Recognition technology in Southall has led to the arrest of nine people wanted by police for a range of offences.

The operation took place on Tuesday, 16 June 2026, along South Road and The Broadway, where officers from Southall's Safer Neighbourhood Team worked alongside specialist policing units to identify individuals sought in connection with ongoing investigations.

Live Facial Recognition technology allows police to compare images captured in public spaces against a watchlist of individuals who are wanted by law enforcement. The system is designed to assist officers in locating suspects, protecting vulnerable people and supporting crime prevention efforts.

Over the course of the six-hour operation, officers made nine arrests. Those detained included individuals wanted for offences such as robbery and knife-related crimes. Police also arrested a suspect linked to a sexual assault investigation who had reportedly remained outstanding for 15 years.

In addition to the arrests, officers monitored several registered sex offenders in the area to ensure they were complying with their legal obligations and conditions.

Police maintained a visible presence throughout the operation and spoke with residents and local businesses about the deployment. Officers said the initiative formed part of wider efforts to improve public safety and reduce crime across Southall.

Acting Inspector Laurence Bisdee, who oversaw the operation, said the results highlighted how modern technology can assist frontline policing and help officers locate individuals who may otherwise remain difficult to trace.

The Metropolitan Police continue to use Live Facial Recognition technology in selected operations across London, subject to legal safeguards and oversight, as part of efforts to identify wanted suspects and enhance community safety.
