Southall school donates books for Malawi

Sun 02 Dec 2007
Six members of a Malawi Education Project return from Malawi and report on the impact of donated books on local schools and children. The 5 week trip was to assess the impact of the libraries they had set up at 2 different schools.

The Malawi Education Project is a tiny non-profit organisation which collects books, stationery and other educational materials that would otherwise go to waste from various sources in Bristol and around the UK. It sorts them and ships these to Malawi, Central Africa, helping to resource and improve the education of many young people, in one of the world's most beautiful yet least developed countries.

They collect resources such as textbooks, reading books, reference books, stationary, musical instruments, sports equipment, art materials and technical equipment, to be distributed throughout a number of primary and secondary schools, colleges and orphanages in Malawi, promoting long-term improvements in their education system.

Their 5 week assessment concluded that the children and teachers from the schools are making good use of the books, are using them in class, and taking good care of them. The Malawi Education Project thanked the teachers and students from Villiers High School, Southall for donating 3,000 books.

If you have any books, in reasonable condition, whether they are for children, or novels, easy reading or reference. Please donate them to this worthy cause.

More information can be found on the Malawi Education Project website.

The next shipment will set sail from Bristol next October 2008.
