"race hate" crime reporting

Sun 16 Mar 2008
How does the media report on "race hate" crime?

A clergyman was assaulted by a 2 Asian men in a “faith hate” crime. Canon Michael Ainsworth suffered cuts, bruises and 2 black eyes in the attack in the grounds of a church in Shadwell, East London.

This happened after he asked a group of rowdy youths to quieten down. He was wearing a clerical collar and during the attack the attackers insulted his profession.

His wife, Rev Janina Ainsworth, who is also a priest in the Church of England said, “There are mindless individuals in every community under the influence of drink and drugs who will engage in random acts of violence.”

Muslim leaders condemned the attack on the clergyman and described it as "cowardly and despicable".

The fear is that the attack could fuel tension in the area, which has a large Asian population, with some people castigating the whole community.

When some one gets murdered for confronting hooded youths for throwing a half-eaten chocolate bar into his car, do you castigate the attackers community? No.

When a police officer had youths constantly sitting on his front garden, did he confront them? No, he moved out.

When a person (even a clergy man) asks a group of young men to quieten down, then there is chance that “mindless individuals in every community under the influence of drink and drugs will engage in random acts of violence.”

This sort of behaviour is not exclusive to any particular community or group. Incident like this are widely used to stir up hatred against the immigrant community.

You won’t find any of this nonsense when it is the other way round.

In august 2007, a man went inside Regent's Park mosque (London) and attacked the imam, leaving him almost blind in both eyes. This was a totally unprovoked attack.

Was there any hint of any one castigating the attacker’s community? No.

Nick Tolson, a former police officer who set up the National Churchwatch safety scheme, said “The police and prosecutors will classify an attack on a mosque or Muslim as a hate crime but not if it is a church or a vicar.”

This is the sort of utter rubbish that inflames situations. As a former police officer he should know better. National newspapers printing such rubbish should also take a more responsible line instead of generating headlines.

For the completely unprovoked serious attack on the imam who “suffered heavy blood loss, damage to both eyes and had to undergo emergency surgery”, Ryan Donegan of West London was charged with grievous bodily harm and with assaulting a police officer.

The Metropolitan Police said they were keeping an open mind about the motivation behind the attack!!!!

Fact: The vast majority of rate hate attacks are against Muslims and race hate attacks against white people are rare, as are faith-based attacks against Christian targets.
