London Assembly Elections

Sat 03 May 2008
Were the London Assembly elections good for the people of Southall?

The British National Party has won a seat on the London Assembly after getting 5.3% of votes. Richard Barnbrook, BNP leader on Barking and Dagenham Council, will take up one of the 25 assembly seats.

He said that "This is Britain, it is for the British people... it is not for people to enter into this land”.

He intends to give the "real people of London" a voice.

His message to the immigrant community was: “Do not be nervous. As long as you abide by our identity”.

The people of Southall would agree with Gerry Gable, of the Campaign group “Hope Not Hate” that a "BNP victory means hatred, violence and stupidity.”

Labour has suffered its worst council results for 40 years.

In his final years as Prime Minister, Tony Blair like any “democratic dictator” or “strong leader” was deaf and blind to the truth. He could not see what was happening nor was he prepared to listen to any one.

Once Gordon Brown got his chance, he failed to deliver miserably. There was no change in Foreign Policy. There was no leadership shown, only ill-conceived policies.

Take detention without trial. If today, there is no need or justification for extending the detention of suspected terror suspects from 28 to 42 days without charge, why try to introduce a draconian measure, on the assumption that it may be needed in the future.

Abolition of the 10% tax rate was a total disaster. No amount of fudging will resolve it and the only people to suffer will be the low paid working people.

Can you think of anything useful that Gordon Brown has done to date?

Did the Labour Party learn any lessons after losing control of Ealing Council?
Were they oblivious to dissatisfaction at local, national and international level?
Will they wake up now or is it too late?
