Cyclist killed in charity bike ride

Thu 24 Jul 2008
A local cyclist taking part in an annual charity bike ride to raise money for sick children was killed last Saturday.

Mohammed Abdullah Shah, 52, from Ealing, was taking part in the 19th annual charity bike ride from Birmingham to London.

Mr Shah was knocked off his bike by a black BMW as he came off the slip road in Milton Keynes, Bedfordshire. He was airlifted to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and died a short time later.

The annual event is organised by a local Southall based charity SACA (Sikh Arts and Culture Association) to raise money for a very good cause. This year it was the charity Children with Leukaemia.

The final part of the ride is to parade through Southall Broadway, with lots of music and fundraising. No music was played last Sunday as a mark of respect.

A message on its website reads: "Special Message to all our Riders, Organisers, Supporters, Sponsors, Beneficiaries, friends and visitors to our website."

"One of our dearest colleagues was involved in a serious and fatal collision with a car on Saturday afternoon."

"At this time, our thoughts and heart felt sympathies are with the family and friends of our rider who was on a selfless mission raising money for a very good cause."

Today, prayers were held for Mohammed Abdullah Shah at 1pm at the Central Jamia Masjid in Southall and the funeral was at 2pm at Greenford Park Cemetery in Greenford.
