Ealing Southall MP calls for calm!
Tue 30 Sep 2008It is extremely misleading and annoying to read news headlines reading "Sharma calls for calm", when the Muslim community has been extremely calm and letting the Police carry out their investigation into the cemetery vandalism.
Local MP for Ealing Southall, Virendra Sharma, said: "This is a callous attack, but we need people to remain calm." He was very slow off the mark as the local Imams had already asked for people to remain calm on Sunday.
Somebody forgot to tell him and the headline grabbers that the community has been calm.
He was in touch with local feeling when he said the Council should increase the security and safety of the graves to make sure something like does not happen again.
Dalawar Chaudhry, of Chaudhry’s TKC on Southall Broadway has been campaigning for years to get Ealing Council to clean up the area.
Dalawar cited problems of prostitution, drug use and drinking in the cemetery and claimed nothing had been done.
He wants to replace the cemetery wall with a metal fence to deter such behaviour, as people will be able to see into the graveyard.
Regular patrols and CCTV cameras are also needed.
