Southall Green safety crackdown
Thu 13 Nov 2008The clamp down has been on a small group of people who have been making life miserable for others living in the area.
Ealing Council officers and the police jointly investigated numerous complaints from local people about anti-social behaviour and dangerous parking that was taking place outside a parade of shops.
Evidence of street drinkers congregating around the public benches and causing a nuisance was gathered by Ealing Council’s CCTV officers.
The CCTV footage also showed some cars had fully mounted the pavement and were parked directly outside shop fronts. Under these circumstances pedestrians and those with children’s buggies were forced into using the road.
New bollards have been installed to prevent cars from getting onto the pavement and the benches and railings have now been removed, making it safer for pedestrians.
Councillor Vlod Barchuk, Cabinet Member for Safer Communities, said: "This operation has been very successful and has had some positive results. It is illegal and highly dangerous for anyone to drive on the pavement and those people needed to be stopped."
"The CCTV cameras were key to the investigation and gathered important evidence which will help our officers prosecute those responsible."
Sergeant Richard Moelwyn-Hughes of the Southall Green Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "Local residents have said they feel a lot safer without the constant congregating of youths in the area."
"The dispersal zone, put in earlier this year, has also assisted us with taking action against people behaving in an anti-social manner. This is a great example of the Southall Green Safer Neighbourhood Police Team and the Council working in partnership to make Southall Green a safer place to live."If you have a local news story, share it with the rest of Southall, by using the contact form.
