Southall crackdown on crime and grime

Wed 03 Dec 2008
The Police and Ealing Council officers were out in force last week dealing with envirocrime, street crime and anti-social behaviour.

During the clampdown on crime and grime in Southall, Ealing Council officers and the Police dealt with issues such as brothels, weapons and waste.

During the week long operation 2 brothels were closed and 12 arrests were made for offences including drug possession.

Lots of premises were visited by envirocrime officers ensure that residents and businesses were disposing of their waste correctly. Dozens of fixed penalty notices were issued to those caught fly-tipping.

Residents were reminded of the penalties they face if they are caught dumping rubbish.

The Council’s Community Safety Team visited secondary schools in Southall to give safety advice, and the team has been handing out personal alarms and other safety devices to residents.

There was also an increased enforcement of dispersal zones, alcohol seizures and drug checks.

Officers were also out identifying unlicensed houses of multiple occupation, which are now being investigated after concerns were raised by residents.

Inspections were also made by the DVLA to ensure vehicles were taxed, and motorists faced having their cars impounded if they were caught out.

Park rangers and police community support officers also ramped up patrols across the borough’s parks and open spaces.

Ian Jenkins, Police Superintendent for Ealing, said: "We are very pleased with the results from this week’s activities. The joint operations between Police and Council came as a direct result of a consultation with the community. We focused on clamping down on drugs and alcohol related anti-social behaviour."
