Sharma resigns as PPS over Heathrow

Thu 29 Jan 2009
Ealing Southall MP, Virendra Sharma, has resigned as an aide (Parliamentary Private Secretary) to the Home Office minister Phil Woolas, after voting against Governments decision to approve a third runway and sixth terminal at Heathrow Airport.

The Government narrowly won the vote on the third runway by a majority of just 19 votes after 28 Labour MPs rebelled.

The other local MP to vote against the expansion is Andrew Slaughter (Ealing Acton & Shepherd's Bush).

Mr Sharma said that the Heathrow expansion will "seriously affect many of my constituents, and my first priority is to represent them."

In some parts of Southall there would be an aircraft flying overhead every 90 seconds.

Pupils at the Featherstone Primary School in Western Road will be deafened by noise from aircraft and their playtime will suffer.

The expansion will have a devastating impact on the education of children because at times they may not be able to hear what the teacher is saying.
