Multi-million pound resurfacing for roads

Sat 07 Mar 2009
Dozens of Ealing’s roads and footpaths will be resurfaced over the next year after Ealing Council agreed a £6.5million programme of work.

A list of 84 lengths of road and 24 stretches of footpath that will be prioritised for resurfacing.

The new investment brings the total spend on the borough’s roads over the last three years to £18.5million.

The Council will carry out a three-month consultation with utility companies to find out if they want to do any work before each road is resurfaced. After resurfacing the companies can only dig up the road in an emergency.

The roads to be resurfaced were identified by a team of inspectors that visit streets across the borough to assess the level of wear and tear. Those in the worst state of repair will be resurfaced first.

80 per cent of the 2008/09 planned work is complete and the remainder is on target to be finished by the end of March.

Council Leader, Councillor Jason Stacey, said: "I’m really pleased that we have again been able to invest such a significant sum to improve the borough’s road and footpaths."

"We know this is an issue that really matters to local people and I’m delighted that we have now invested more in this area in the last three years than in the whole of the previous decade."
