Southall cheers on Amir Khan

Sun 15 Mar 2009
The Southall community was mobilised to see Amir Khan fight the Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera and support their adopted "role model" icon.

The event took place at Chaudhry’s TKC, where three large screens were provided for fans to watch the fight as it happened.

This was a community event which was free for everyone, customers who were dining at the restaurant and those who just wanted to see the fight.

Everyone there had come to support Amir Khan, a British and Muslim role model.

After 10 pm, normal trading ceased at the restaurant and customers were provided free hospitality food.

As Amir Khan entered the stadium in Manchester, traditional Indian drums were beating in the Southall restaurant to the delight of all those present.

Everyone present, irrespective of age or sex, was vocally supporting Amir Khan. They were impressed with his speed and array of punches. The restaurant staff was just as vocal as the other fans.

This was the biggest gathering at the TKC, bigger than the World Cup cricket.

In the olden days the role model used to be Mohammed Ali, today we are fortunate to have an inspirational role model like Amir Khan.

Southall will be looking forward to more visits from Amir.
