Windmill Park Community Centre wins £49,030 grant

Sat 05 Dec 2009
The Windmill Park Community Centre project has won a grant of £49,030 in The People’s Millions TV contest last month.

Eight groups in the ITV London region were competing to win a share of £250,000 in the Big Lottery Fund good cause money in The People’s Millions TV contest.

Projects up for the vote will enhance local facilities, help people to enjoy their local area and enable local people to get more involved in their community.

The TV contest saw two projects go head-to-head each night in the week of 23 to 27 November.

The 4 winners plus the best runner-up with the most phone votes were awarded grants of up to £50,000 each for their community project.

On Wednesday 25 November, the Catalyst Communities Housing Association Ltd’s Windmill Park Community Centre project from Southall beat the Golden Jubilee Project from Haringey to win a grant of £49,030.

The money will be used to transform a disused room into a media and arts room, with an IT suite and recording studio.

This addition to the centre will have a huge impact across the neighbourhood, opening up opportunities to learn everything from basic computer skills to how to design a website or to unleash their creative side in the recording studio and arts area.

The extra space will mean more groups will be able to use the centre, whether through attending a training course, developing business ideas or just to let off some steam.

The new facilities will help the estate to combat problems of unemployment and anti-social behaviour by opening up new training opportunities to get people back into work and a space for young people to spend their time.
