Council and police ready for week of action in Southall

Sun 25 Apr 2010
Ealing Council and borough police will hit the streets of Southall on Monday to kick-start a week-long crackdown on crime and anti-social behaviour.

The Southall week of action will see Ealing Council and police safer neighbourhoods teams tackle issues that are of concern to local residents.

The enforcement activity includes health and safety inspections at local restaurants and trading standards checks on retailers who sell unclassified DVDs.

Licensed premises, which are open beyond agreed trading hours and selling alcohol illegally, are also set to be targeted.

On Monday, police and council officers will be on hand to offer crime prevention advice to residents at information stands in Dormers Wells, Lady Margaret, Norwood Green, Southall Broadway and Southall Green wards.

Officers will give practical advice about personal safety and burglary, including information about where they can obtain SmartWater kits, to protect their property.

Susan Parsonage, Director of Safer Communities, said: "We know that people are concerned about anti-social behaviour in Southall. If a shop is selling dodgy DVDs or a fast food outlet is dumping rubbish on the streets, it can have a negative effect on the local area.

"These are the issues we will be tackling with the police next week to make Southall a safer place."

Inspector Rob Bryan from Ealing Police said: "My teams are working hard throughout the year. By running a week of proactive measures, we are able to deal with those long-term issues of concern. The community has been consulted and the actions we are taking during the week are a direct result of what they asked for."

The council’s Envirocrime team will also be working with commercial premises to ensure they have the correct means of disposing of their waste and residents to identify any general issues concerning litter and waste.
