The worst floods for 80 years have killed 1,400 and affected more than 3 million people according to the UN.

About 1.8 million people are in need of food aid.

The return of monsoon rains, which are forecast to continue for next few day, are hampering aid effort and has raised fears of renewed flooding.

This disaster would be a real challenge for any country let alone Pakistan which is facing terrorism among other problems.

In 2005 an earthquake in Kashmir killed 75,000 people.

Update:
Cricket players Azhar Mahmood, Saqlain Mushtaq and Abdur Razzaq did not attend. Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari decided to pay a surprise visit to the Pakistan cricket team. It was also the eve of the 2nd Test match against England in Birmingham.
