Southall celebrates Royal Wedding
Sat 30 Apr 2011Kate Middleton’s grandfather, Ron Goldsmith, lived at number 57 with his 5 children and parents in the 1930s.
The party began at 10 am and lasted until 6 pm. The bhangra style entertainment started in the afternoon. A steady flow of visitors came and went during the day.
Residents saw the royal wedding live on a giant screen hired for the day through sponsorship from local businesses. Local businesses also sponsored the food, drink and festivities.
Scenes recreating a traditional Asian wedding were enacted as part of the celebrations.
Bollywood dancers, Asian drummers, bhangra music and Indian singers entertained the crowds. Among those present were the group Heera and H Dhami.
Two of the people helping organise the party Virendra Sharma, MP for Ealing Southall and Ealing Council leader Julian Bell were present later in the day.
The day demonstrated that we are a “multi-cultural, multi-racial country”.
The road was closed to traffic for the festivities.
