Southall shops closed
Tue 09 Aug 2011Almost all of the businesses on Southall Broadway, South Road and King Street are closed and have their shutters down. Police presence is clearly visible on the streets.
After the shocking vandalism and violence in Ealing followed by the current disturbances in Hayes, people of Southall are preparing for any criminal activity.
There are people on the Gurdwara roof opposite the Glassy Junction looking to spot any potential trouble early on.
Last night riots took place in Ealing and West Ealing. Ealing Council advised residents to stay indoors and businesses were told to close early.
Shops were looted, cars smashed and properties set on fire.
Shops, particularly those stocking valuables such as electronics, jewellery and alcohol, are being encouraged to take all possible security precautions.
Shopkeepers are being asked to ensure all valuables are taken out of shop windows and to place small items in safes.
Shutters should be pulled down and anything that could be used as a missile, such as A-boards, tables and chairs, should be locked away inside the shop.
Councillor Bell, said: "The disorder I witnessed in Ealing was deeply disturbing, not just because of the level of lawlessness and criminal damage that has taken place but also because it has happened here."
"The council is doing everything possible to help the police restore order in our community."
"We need calm to return to our streets and I would appeal to all those young people taking part in these disturbances to go home and think about the consequences of their actions for their victims, their community and their futures."
Ealing’s Youth Mayor, 16 year-old Jahanara Chaudry, from Southall said: "It isterrible that Ealing’s young people are being tarnished by the mindless actions of a few."
"As Youth Mayor, I want the local police and young adults to work together. I believe we can really help each other through times such as these. And I encourage anyone who is tempted to get caught up in this looting to stop and think about their communities and their own future."
