TV stars launch Ealing Shop Local campaign

Sat 10 Sep 2011
TV presenter Angellica Bell joined her father, Council Leader Julian Bell, in Ealing to encourage people to support small businesses affected by the riot.

Mum-to-be Angellica was joined by husband TV presenter Michael Underwood as they shopped for clothes for their first child. The couple visited Babye on Ealing Green, before visiting businesses in West Ealing.

Angellica Bell said: "It's sad that so many independent businesses in Ealing were devastated by the riots. It's good to see that shops are starting to reopen, but I know for some it will be many months before they fully recover."

"The best thing we can now do to help people get back on their feet is to support small businesses by shopping in riot hit areas and we're happy to do our bit."

Julian Bell said: "The riots were truly awful, but the way the community has responded has been absolutely exceptional."

"There's a real sense of pride in the area and everyone really is keen to do what they can to help, so I'm sure we'll get a lot of support for the Shop Local campaign."

"I'm delighted that the council has been able to provide free parking in six car parks to get shoppers back into the worst affected areas."

Liz Pilgrim, Director and Founder of Babye said: "It was great to meet Julian Bell, Angellica Bell and Michael Underwood and see them supporting local, independent businesses who are struggling in the current economic climate anyway, even without the mindless behaviour we saw three weeks ago."

"There’s a saying that ‘you don’t miss something until it’s gone’ and I think this has been a real turning point for Ealing whereby the community seems to be eating, drinking and shopping more locally than they were before."

The weekend free parking council car parks are:

  • Perceval House car park, Ealing town centre
  • Springbridge Road, Ealing town centre
  • Deans Gardens, West Ealing
  • Arden Road, West Ealing
  • Witham Road, West Ealing
  • South Ealing Road, South Ealing
All participating car parks will be clearly sign posted. Normal charges apply in all other car parks and for all on-road parking.
