Ealing Southall MP denies illegal donation

Fri 23 Sep 2011
The Electoral Commission is reviewing an allegation that Ealing Southall MP Virendra Sharma received a donation from the Indian government towards a party he held to celebrate his election victory in May 2010.

The celebration party was held on May 23 last year at the Monsoon Banqueting Suites in Southall. It was attended by David Miliband, the former foreign secretary, and Lord Paul, the Labour donor.

A £5,000 donation allegedly made by IncredibleIndia, the Indian Tourism Board, was not declared in the Parliamentary register of members' interests.

Accepting donations from foreign sources is illegal under the Parliamentary rules.

The Electoral Commission is trying to establish whether or not there has been a breach of the rules by examining the information gathered so far.

Mr Sharma has denied receiving any money from IncredibleIndia and welcomes the opportunity to have the facts properly examined and will fully cooperate with the Electoral Commission.
