Riot hit businesses get rate relief

Sun 25 Sep 2011
Ealing Council is giving 650 businesses rate relief totalling more than £187,000 to help them cope with hardship caused by last month’s riots.

All small businesses that suffered direct damage and have already received a £1,200 disturbance allowance will automatically be given one month of their annual business rates for free.

Other businesses in Ealing Broadway, West Ealing, South Ealing and Ealing Common that suffered from disruption but did not receive direct damage will be given one week free, with the discount capped at £500.

Council Leader, Councillor Julian Bell, said: "The days after the riots were unbelievably hard for many businesses and not just those that suffered direct damage."

"The riot certainly caused hardship, so it’s only right that we award these discounts to help traders."

"I’m pleased we’ve been able to take a common sense approach and just issued revised bills, instead of insisting on a form-filling exercise."

"For some businesses the riot could make the difference between profit and loss, so I know this discount will really help some of those who are struggling."

The council has powers to give hardship relief to businesses in difficult circumstances. There is no paperwork to complete and no need to contact the council. Qualifying businesses will automatically receive revised bills by Monday, 26 September.

Any businesses that do not receive a revised bill, but believe they have suffered as a result of the riot should call the business rates hotline on 020 8825 7020 by 15 October 2011.

The council has also been offering free weekend parking in six of its car parks during September.
