Southall trader banned from selling food

Mon 17 Oct 2011
For the first time in its history Ealing Council has secured a ban against a restaurant owner to stop him from running or managing any food business.

Mohammed Wais, owner of The Green Restaurant, 70 The Green, Southall, pleaded guilty to eight food hygiene offences at Ealing Magistrates' Court in August 2011.

The magistrates referred the case to Isleworth Crown Court for sentencing.

Mr Wais appeared at Isleworth Crown Court on 7 October 2011, where the judge prohibited him from managing any type of food business.

He was also ordered to pay £1,200 towards the council's costs and serve 130 hours of community service.

When the council’s enforcement team spotted a bucket of peeled onions covered in cockroaches outside the restaurants back door, they carried out a spot check at the restaurant.

On the day of the inspection, the restaurant had no electricity and was still selling food to the public. This meant that the fridges were not working and there was no hot water for staff to clean their hands.

The officer found a huge infestation of cockroaches throughout the premises, as well as mice droppings all over the shelving and inside the fridges. The surfaces and floors of the restaurant were dirty and slimy with ground in grease and food debris.

Councillor Ranjit Dheer, cabinet member for community services and safety, said: "We are extremely pleased with the court's decision to stop this man being able to operate a food business."

"We hope this will send out a strong message to other traders in the borough that we will use the full weight of the law to take enforcement action against anyone found committing food hygiene offences."
