Jail for selling banned porn

Fri 25 Nov 2011
Two men caught selling counterfeit DVDs and unclassified illegal pornography have been jailed.

Avtar Singh Malhotra, 33, of Lady Margaret Road Southall and Amarjeet Singh, 23, of Manor Way, Southall appeared before Ealing Magistrates.

They were both sentenced to four months in prison. They had pleaded guilty to 19 charges in connection with supplying banned and counterfeit DVDs and CDs at an earlier hearing.

Trading Standards officers swooped on units one and four, Palika Bazaar, at 37-39 The Broadway, Southall, after a tip-off that the stalls were selling counterfeit and banned extreme pornography.

The operation was deliberately set up to conceal the illegal trade. To avoid suspicion unit one, which faces the Broadway, sold legitimate DVDs while the dodgy DVDs were stashed out of sight at unit four, at the back of Palika Bazaar.

More than 5000 DVDs and CDs were seized and will now be destroyed.

Councillor Ranjit Dheer, cabinet member for community services and safety, said: "It’s disgusting that people profit from selling these banned films."

"Our officers won’t hesitate to take action against traders dealing in extreme pornography. I’m pleased that the courts have taken the matter seriously and handed down prison sentences."
