Southall's Glassy Junction is no more
Sat 10 Mar 2012
The world famous Glassy Junction, which has been serving locals since 1994 is being replaced by an outlet of the Saravanaa Bhavan, which has a chain of high quality vegetarian restaurants worldwide.
Glassy Junction, the first Indian pub in the UK to accept Rupees as payment, offered a good range of Indian beers like Cobra and Kingfisher.
It was a place to have a glass of beer or lassi, sit down and watch cricket matches playing on bar televisions throughout the day and evening.
Britain's pubs are closing at the rate of two a day and have been doing so for the past decade, just like petrol stations. They face increased competition from shops and supermarkets.
Alterations to the premises in South Road have going on for months and the restaurant is expected to open this month.
Saravanaa Bhavan has restaurants in Canada, USA, France, Germany and in the Middle East. Their London outlets include East Ham, Harrow and Tooting. They also have outlets in Leicester and Essex.
