Council suspends Havelock Arms pub license
Fri 20 Apr 2012The Havelock Arms at 37 – 39 Havelock Road, Southall had its licence suspended after police made an emergency application to have their licence reviewed.
The application asked the council to review the pub’s licence under section 53(a) of the Licensing Act following incidents linked to both serious crime and disorder.
The council’s licensing sub-committee considered the application on Thursday, 12 April 2012.
The suspension will remain in place until a full reviewing hearing 28 days later. The business may appeal the decision before this time.
Members of the public can share their opinions about the business, by writing to the council’s licensing team by Tuesday, 24 April 2012.
The pub is situated very close to the Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, the largest Sikh temple outside of India.
It is also situated close to the car park at the bottom of King Street where illegal workers desperately wait all day for any job opportunities.
Only last year the pub had its license revoked.
After many attempts, the Police lost confidence in the licensee to manage the premises and applied for the premises license to be revoked. The premises license was revoked on 23rd September 2011 by Ealing Council.
Some of the incidents were:
- In February 2011, a vulnerable 71-year old man was assaulted inside the premises
- In May 2011, a female victim was “glassed” inside the premises. The crime scene had been cleaned by bar staff
- The management of the pub witnessed several incidents outside the pub and took no action, including assaults on their own staff.
The licensee appealed against the decision and won.
