Ealing's new Youth Mayor

Sat 19 May 2012
The fourth Youth Mayor of Ealing to be elected is Sagar Ghelani, 16, from Southall.

During a two-week campaign Sagar competed against 10 other candidates. During that time the candidates visited schools, youth centres, projects and special schools to rally support and persuade youngsters to give them their vote.

A total of 2749 young people from across the borough went to polling booths or voted online for their chosen candidate.

The five candidates with the most votes at the end of the fortnight went into the final at Westside Young People’s Centre on Tuesday 8 May 2012. They gave speeches and presented their manifestos before the next Youth Mayor was selected.

Sagar’s priorities for the coming year are to encourage more youngsters to become involved in the borough’s decision making, help to make them more aware of some of Ealing’s major issues, such as homelessness, and help make young people more aware of the impact of racism.

Sagar said: "I am delighted to be elected Ealing’s Youth Mayor. The other candidates were amazing so this is a great honour. I want to thank everyone for their support and I’m looking forward to representing Ealing’s young people."

Councillor Patricia Walker, cabinet member for Children and Young People said: "I congratulate Sagar on his successful campaign. I am confident that he will provide a strong voice for the borough’s young people in the coming year."

"I would also like to give my thanks to our outgoing Youth Mayor, Jahanara Chaudhry, who has done such an excellent job of representing Ealing youth in the last 12 months. I wish her every success in her future."

During his year of office, Sagar will represent young people from across the borough at official events and champion young people's issues and causes.

The outgoing Youth Mayor, Jahanara Chaudhry, was a pupil at Featherstone High School in Southall and lives in Southall.

The second Youth Mayor, Yewande Rebecca Ladipo also attended Featherstone High School in Southall.

The newly elected Mayor of Ealing, Councillor Mohammad Aslam of the Norwood Green ward, is also from Southall.
