The Olympic Torch Relay is coming to Southall
Sun 22 Jul 2012Get into the spirit of the games by lining the relay route and cheering on the torchbearers – including Southall own Narinder Birdi and Tom Thacker.
Crowds are expected to line the Torch Relay route from Northala Fields, towards Southall and along Uxbridge Road through Hanwell, West Ealing and on to Ealing Green before reaching Walpole Park.
Among those carrying the Torch will be Southall charity worker and volunteer, Tom Thacker and Narinder Birdi whose long established sunday school and local scout group are still thriving.
Leader of Ealing Council, Councillor Julian Bell said: "This is going to be a once in a life-time opportunity to see the Olympic Torch travel through Ealing and I hope that people will get into the Olympic spirit to cheer it on."
The relay is expected to reach Lady Margaret Road at 17:25 pm and proceed along Southall High street at 17:47 pm.
The relay will have a significant impact on traffic. Parking and loading restrictions will be in operation along the route from 8am until the evening of Tuesday 24 July.
Vehicles following behind the torch will only be able to travel at 4mph and oncoming traffic will be held up at different times. Use public transport wherever possible and leave your car at home.
Get to your chosen viewing point at least one hour before the Olympic Torch is due to pass along your point.
Stay on the footpath during the relay as you will not be able to stand on pedestrian refuges or traffic islands.
A 'rolling road block' will operate during the relay as the Olympic Torch passes along its route. This will result in restricted access to and from some roads adjoining the route for 10 to 15 minutes.
Note: If you are travelling South along Lady Margaret Road from 5.30 - 5.50pm (approximately) on Tuesday 24 July, you will be diverted east along Carlyle Avenue and Dormers Wells Lane. You will not be able to travel south onto Palgrave Avenue, Kingsley Avenue or Waverley Road via Burns Road for the time the relay is passing. If you have a local news story, share it with the rest of Southall, by using the contact form.
