Southall sports ground boosted by grant

Thu 20 Sep 2012
Spikes Bridge Park in Southall has received a £90,000 grant from the Football Foundation.

The funding will go towards building a new sports pavilion at Spikes Bridge Park, which will house changing rooms, lockers and a community space.

It will provide space for a clubhouse for local sports charity and football club, the London Tigers, as well as a venue for Southall Community Alliance – a local community group – to deliver courses, information evenings and social events.

The Football Foundation is the country’s largest sports charity and is funded by the Premier League, The Football Association and government (via Sport England).

The foundation has awarded around 8,000 grants worth more than £420 million towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract additional partnership funding of more than £520 million.

Councillor Julian Bell, leader of Ealing Council, said: "We’re delighted to receive this support from the Football Foundation, which will help us transform the facilities into a fantastic venue for grassroots sport in Southall."

"I hope the redevelopments will encourage more local people to get involved in sport in their community, especially in the legacy of this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games."

Paul Thorogood, chief executive of the Football Foundation, said: "I commend Ealing Council, London Tigers and Southall Community Alliance for working tirelessly to secure this funding and I look forward to seeing the end result in the near future."

"This year is an exciting time for sport in this country and a tremendous opportunity to create a grassroots legacy. The hosting of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will inspire generations of people up and down the country to reap the rewards that sport has to offer."

"The Football Foundation is dedicated, with funding provided from the Premier League, The FA and government, to raising the standard of grassroots community sports facilities and to getting more people actively playing the national sport."

The project has already benefited from £545,000 of other external funding, as well as £300,000 from the council. The redevelopments will also include an upgrade of all playing fields at the park, a new artificial-turf football pitch and new cricket training facilities.
